Democracy Watch supports the initiatives of local government units (LGUs) in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic with digital solutions. It is important for LGUs to respond with dynamic solutions to the challenges posed by the virus. This includes upgrading digital infrastructure to help test, trace, and vaccinate citizens.

The cooperation between the public and private sectors to strengthen digital connectivity is commendable. An example of this is the Mandaluyong LGU and its telco partner Globe Telecom. Their current engagement allows for Free WiFi in the city, which citizens can use to access information about their vaccination schedules and other concerns. Democracy Watch calls for the continued partnership between local governments and businesses to further enhance digital capacity in local areas.

Improving digital infrastructure is a step forward in improving the overall governance in the country. With faster connectivity and better digital support mechanisms, local governments can respond more efficiently and effectively to citizens’ urgent needs. As the Philippines faces the new normal, it must work towards digital transformation for the benefit of its population.
