Stratbase ADR Institute and Democracy Watch Philippines will be hosting a roundtable discussion to present the special study, “Term Limits and Political Dynasties: Unpacking the Links” written by Dr. Ronald U. Mendoza, Miann Banaag and Michael H. Yusingco. It will be held on April 11, 2019 in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.
Even with its explicit clause in the 1987 Constitution, political dynasties have circumvented the law to continue its political presence in the country. The House of Representatives developed a draft charter change seeking to end term limits in the hopes of ending dynasties in the country. However, political dynasties have existed prior to the Marcos regime and continue to expand into “fat dynasties.” In this context, Mendoza, Banaag and Yusingco look into the different ways to address the issue on political dynasties beyond just removal of term limits and into sustainable, feasible reforms that further strengthens competence within the body politic.
